WHAT IS A WELLNESS COUNSELOR?
According to the National Wellness Institute (NWI), there are six dimensions of wellness: Emotional, Physical, Intellectual, Occupational, Spiritual, and Social. Wellness counselors address all six of these. They help clients cultivate self-awareness, self-regulation, curiosity, motivation, become aware of their belief systems and values, implement self-care, discover their unique qualities and strengths, and care for their interconnectedness relationally.
As a wellness counselor, I adhere to the six dimensions of wellness for my scope of practice set forth by the NWI, and I apply this scope through specializing in helping people listen to and care for their bodies with gentleness and understanding so they can form more meaningful connections with themselves and others. I also have additional training and certifications in many ways that we relate to our bodies, including how our nervous systems influence our sense of safety and thereby our ability to connect with others, how we relate to food, grieve, communicate, relate to our sense of body image, and regulate our emotions.
I do not diagnose mental health conditions or prescribe medications. I am not a mental health therapist. The modality I work with for embodied eating disorder recovery can be read about here. For a more in-depth look at what wellness counseling is, please feel free to read here.
WHAT DOES OUR WORK LOOK LIKE?
First and foremost, I help people listen to their bodies. Everything our body does is in the aid of survival, and the patterns and behaviors that our body adopts to keep us safe work really well, until they don't. The ways we find ourselves stuck, often started as our body trying to help us get through something that was overwhelming and/or felt unsurvivable. That is why there is never any room for shame in something our body does to try to help us regulate and make it through difficult things, although sometimes the impact of the those things do cause disconnect in our relationships with others.
Most people come to me because they are wanting to address something that is no longer working for them, or is confusing about their relationship with their bodies, or because the overflow of that is reflecting in their relationships around them. What you are reaching out for support for will set the focus for our time and work together.
Caring for our bodies as a whole, rather than through a compartmentalized approach, is a very effective way of integrating the ways we create wellness for our bodies and enjoy all aspects of life. I am passionate about using enjoyment through our senses as a primary healing modality.
DO YOU TAKE INSURANCE?
I do not partner with any insurance, however I do offer sliding scale rates for both students and financial need. If a sliding rate is something you need to be able to make it possible for us to work together, please know it is available for you. An initial twenty-minute exploratory conversation is always available free of charge to answer any questions you have, and for us to get a sense of whether we are a good fit for working together. Please feel free to reach out and schedule that here.
